Playboy in the coupons
While Lindy was cutting coupons out of the Sunday paper this weekend, she came across one for Playboy. I knew they were hurting but this is a strange place to be advertising naked women don't you think? Anyway, today Time had an article about their woes as well. Maybe the magazine will die with Hef.

NPR books page
I may be quite late to the party, but hey, I got there. Frantz directed me to an NPR article about Cheney and his control over the early White House, but I ended up spending more time on their books page. I usually find new books by browsing amazon.com, the Discover new writers list at B&N and the buy 1 get one 1/2 of tables at Borders. NPR's page though has me filling up the Amazon wish list with all kinds of goodies. I'm not big on talk radio, but npr.org is quite awesome.
Rush on Barack
People are making quite a fuss about Rush Limbaugh saying that he wants Obama to fail. Big damn deal. I wanted Bush to fail miserably in his second term (which he did, I win!), so if a radical right winger wants a Democrat President to fall on his face, it's not much of a shocker. Obama's ideas fly in the face of hardcore Republican ideals. It's not that Limbaugh wants the country to fail, he just doesn't want to see Obama rise to be one of the greats. Of course, I hope Rush is wrong and that Obama puts America back in good standing. I can't believe I kinda sorta stood up for Limbaugh.

Bill Watterson
I love Calvin and Hobbes. The complete series is on my bookshelf ready for Logan and Connor to enjoy when they're older, so I was excited to see this link to some of Bill Watterson's rare early work. Enjoy.

The United States of Tara
Last night after watching some of the inaugural ball, we watched Man vs. Wild (in the Yukon) and The United States of Tara from Showtime. Man vs. Wild was pretty good. Bear didn't eat anything crazy and it felt a bit more mapped out than usual, but the abandoned goldmine and the glacial crevasse spelunking was cool. I don't care if it's all plotted out beforehand, I likes me some Bear Grylls. He seems to be having fun out there and who could get tired of hearing talk about bearings, being disorientated, and things being slippy.
Then, we watched The United States of Tara. The previews looked really good, it seemed to be getting some good press, and Diablo Cody helped create it and I liked Juno. Alas, it seems I was bamboozled. I didn't like much of it save for the fight between Buck and the daughter's jackoff boyfriend. There wasn't any heart. The parents are clueless and seem to be written as the cool parents who never get on their kids case regardless. Tara finds out that her 15 year old daughter got the morning after pill and what happens? Nothing. The dad says, I'm not very happy with you right now whilst swigging a beer in front of the tv. Really? I think most dads would be cleaning their guns. It just irked me. Plus, the kids having to deal with a mom and her schizophrenia because she wanted to be off the meds is a bullshit premise. And the fact that they take it in stride is bullshit. It does seem, however, that they get fed up with it in later episodes. We might try another episode since Showtime shows their programming every night, but I'll most likely pass.

President Obama
It still feels like I'm going to wake up with the country in the hands of W. I can't believe this day has finally come and we can call Barack Obama our President. Watching the inauguration today was amazing. We went to Conseco Fieldhouse and sat in the National City suite to watch on the big screen. Being with a crowd of people who all support this man felt unbelievable. I can't imagine what it must feel like for the African-American community (I'm including Haitian-Americans in there) to see this wall broken down. I hope he can bring about the change we need. I hope he will engage the world and put us in the light again. I hope the country will support his leadership. W left this country in shambles but I believe this is the man to repair the damage. Good luck Mr. President and God bless you and your family.

The Curious Case of Ms. Ciccone and the Hirsute Hoohah
I saw on MSN today that an old nude picture of Madonna was being auctioned by Christies. So of course I went to their site and looked it up. My oh my, she was a hairy one.

The Baconator
After reading about Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick being scammed by Madoff, I wondered, "What the hell is a Ponzi scam?" Luckily, mentalfloss.com came through:

Rooney's hamstring
Man Utd won yesterday and are now second in the Premiership behind Liverpool. They are two points behind the Scousers, but have played one less game, so they could be in first pretty soon. Rooney scored a goal in the first minute of the game and that was all they needed. Unfortunately, he hurt his hamstring and could be out for three weeks. The Red Devils face Bolton this weekend, but without Rooney (and possibly Tevez and Evans too) it could be tougher than it should be.
HOLY F***! It's cold
It's below zero here today even before the windchill. I lost three toes just running out to the mailbox. It's so cold here that no matter how you describe it, the word "fuck" comes into play. Fuck me it's cold. Goddamn, it's really fucking cold. Holy fucking shit it's cold outside. Fucking fuck it's fucking cold outfuckingside. It's so fucking cold I think my nuts fucking froze. F-f-f-f-uck it's nippy. So stay inside if you don't like saying fuck because it's really motherfucking bitter cold out there fucker.

Less homework revolution
This story was on MSNBC today talking about the extreme amount of homework put on kids today. If I had stayed in Tulsa for high school I know I would've had at least 4-6hrs of work a night not including all the projects and papers. I've heard other stories about young elementary kids having crazy amounts of work from people here too. No third grader needs to do a major project. Homework should start ramping up around 5th grade, but it should never be a regular 4hour event.

Pelicans are not the wicked awesome birds I thought they were
Seriously, pelicans are assholes. I used to feel sorry for the ones that had there bill/pouch/mouths sliced, but maybe it was vigilante justice. Just check the link below:

Gaza
What is going on in the world? I don't know who's wrong or who's right in this fight, but the pictures in the slideshow with this story bring some realism to the conflict in Gaza. It's not soldiers or government or terrorists being hurt, it's just people.
New music 2009
There hasn't been much out lately as far as music goes, but there are a few good bands putting out albums in the near future. U2 and the Decemberists have new stuff in March. Art Brut in April. Doves and the Yeah Yeah Yeah's come out later this year.
The album that really caught my eye came from the band Goblin Cocks (01/27). Left Eye from TLC has a cd coming out too, apparently from beyond the grave. Does anyone need to hear any of her "lost" recordings? And who dies in Honduran car crashes? She probably should have uncovered her eye whilst driving. Anywho, back to Goblin Cocks. Why did they think this was a good band name? It's too confusing. Is it about fellatio or goblin genitalia or, my personal hope, roosters from the world of goblins?

Sports switch
This weekend was good for my teams sportswise. Manchester United beat the evil Chelsea 3-0 with goals from Vidic, Rooney and Berbatov. Rooney actually kicked between Ashley Cole's legs to reach the ball and score. It was the Guiness Brilliant Play of the Game. I was quite happy. Logan watched the game with me and it's awesome to have him ask to watch soccer. Another bright point of the game was seeing Ronaldo starting to grow up a bit. No flopping. No bitching about fouls. Is our Portuguese winger becoming a man? Only time will tell, but if he keeps it up, he may enter my good graces. This should make Frantz happy.
So there, I said something nice about Ronaldo. Now I will say something about a player I usually like, but who pissed me off this weekend. The Eagles won which made me happy, but McNabb's little move on the NY sidelines where he picked up their phone after running out of bounds was ridiculous. It wasn't at the T.O. or Ocho Cinco level of retarded, but it was still a low class move.

Pushing Daisies countdown
I went to ABC.com today to see if they were ever going to show the last 3 episodes of "Pushing Daisies." There is a little countdown clock on the page that seems to indicate an airing tomorrow night, however, if you look at the schedule, it shows "The Bachelor 237: Can a guy with a hump find true love?" Who the fuck knows what they're doing. They leave shit shows on and take off good ones. "Pushing Daisies" had been great this year and it kept on improving until it got axed. Would it have survived if the writer's strike hadn't happened or lasted so long? I hope they show the remaining episodes. Ned, Chuck, Emerson and Olive will be missed.
On a brighter note, "Lost" comes back on the 21st. Hooray! There is such a dearth of good tv right now. I find myself watching Discovery and Iron Chef much more than in the past. At least, Zodiac is on every other night on Starz.

A kick in the nuts
What a morning it's been. 524,000 jobs lost. Palin is still in the news for some reason. Connor had a tantrum this morning and kicked me in the balls... hard. And to top it off, Logan told me to shut up on the way to the daycare (he got yanked out of the car and we had a nice chat). Awesome...
We did have free doughnut holes at work though. YES!

Cloudy
Tis a gloomy January day here in Indianapolis. We woke to freezing rain and it's been dark outside all day. It fits though as work is going kind of slow. This time last week there is a possiblity that you would have found me in pajamas.
Wait, I just heard something that sounded like a train whistle. Either it was some weird airflow thing in the lab or Frantz is playing conductor again. Things appear to be picking up.

Back to normal
After 3 weeks of napping, reading, playing video games and watching tv, it's back to work. I no longer get the nervous feeling that I used to at this time of year. I was actually ready to come back and have life back to normal. I've already had one chemistry disappointment so normalcy has indeed returned.
The holidays were nice this year. Christmas day was very nice and the boys enjoyed all of their new toys and whatnot. I did quite well on the loot this year too. I got some shirts, books, video games and my ipod touch. Then we had a few days of madness while the family descended upon our house for 2 days. Lindy and I had a date mixed in there too. We went to the Bodies exhibit and looked some cut up winkies and hoohas. We saw Doubt too, which meant we were out until 10:30 or so, which is late for us. The movie was a touch slow, but the acting was quite good.
New Year's Eve saw me lose $20, but come in 4th from a pool of eight in a poker tourney at my parent's house. There were no fights or cops called this year, YES!
Now it all starts over again. Logan starts kindergarten this year, which ties my stomach in knots when I think about it. I'm shooting for a promotion, but I'm not getting my hopes up too high. Connor will turn three and probably find new, higher things to jump off of. Frantz will find new ways to harass me. It should be fun.
