a week off

Ahhhh, a week off of work. Video games! Reading! Movies! A couple of days in Chicago! Lunch with a Haitian! And no work except to run in and turn the heat off on a reaction. Said reaction was working when I left, but nowhere near complete.

We have a free Showtime preview weekend so we're going to try and knock out all of Dexter season 4. Also, Comcast on demand can suck it. We caught a few episodes of Breaking Bad season 2 on there and once season 3 started they removed all of them. So I had to add season 2 back onto the Netflix list. Booooo!

I started playing "Red Faction Guerrilla" on Xbox and holy crap it's fun. I got a good deal on it through amazon and now I'm blowing shit up left and right. It's kind of like "Mercenaries" with more destruction.

Also, I got "Henry Hatsworth's Puzzling Adventure" for the DS and it's addictive as hell.

As for new music, the new Ted Leo is fantastic and I've really been enjoying The Big Pink too.

Now, it's off to read a few books to the boys and get their asses in bed so I can relax.

Poor priest

This headline doesn't read very well:

Transfer cleared by pope, priest molested again

Oh fuck, now I'm Leno.

Kirstie Alley

I'm really tired of this bitch and her big life.

Under Great White Northern Lights

I got my White Stripes box set today! It is awesome. It came in a really cool box with an LP, a 45, a DVD with the documentary, a DVD of the 10th anniversary show, a live CD, a thick photo book with pictures from the tour, and a few other goodies. I made the boys watch some of the concert DVD, which reminded me how much fun they were live. This in turn made me a bit sad since they haven't done anything live in years. But oh well, here's hoping this wasn't their last tour.

By the way, I survived the job cuts. My boss didn't which blows, but I got assigned to another senior who is pretty nice. We'll see how it goes. I've been pretty set in my ways and comfortable with my lab for a long time. I listen to whatever music I want and now I will have to share airspace. I have a corner lab with loads of room and now I'm relegated to the middle. That's what headphones are for right? But, I'm still getting paid and I could be working for a complete asshole instead of someone nice and I have a few friends in the lab too. It should be pretty good. Whew...

The Greatest

A certain bank teller I know has been off work for a few days now. She must be feeling pretty sad now without her humming, money handling partner. This one goes out to you Jess.

I've said it before...

and I'll say it again. Those politicians most opposed to gay rights and gay marriage are the gayest ones of all.

My friend the tea kettle

This is for the whistling Indian.

Healthcare reform

I think people at my work who have preached against health care reform and are looking at the layoffs coming at the end of the week are finally seeing the light. If someone with a family of four loses their job and has to go on COBRA, they're looking at about $1800 a month for coverage instead of ~$300. So you lose your job and have to pay 6X what you're used to paying. Neat! Luckily, we have a better backup, but there are a lot of people at my work who are the sole providers for their families. I've even heard one hardcore Bushman say that he is seeing the other side's point of view now. Lord, it's a miracle!

Karen Elson - The Ghost Who Walks

Jack White's wife is sounding pretty good.

Enjoy.

One more week

I took today off since this week was dragging along. We have one more week until we find out who the 27 people are . I went through and found 36 people who were hired after me, so it's going to be close unless more people retire.

So today, I'm going to stay at home and relax. No twenty minute conversations about layoffs. No crazy rumors. Just reading, playing video games, watching movies, and napping. Oh yeah, I can get all that in in 8 hours.

What am I reading? Under the Dome by King.

What am I listening to? Work by the Shout Out Louds, but yesterday my iPod was dead, so I listened to stuff on Lala through pitchfork.com. The Big Pink, Surfer Blood, and Local Natives were all pretty good. I also listened to Broken Bells on npr.org and it's ok, but kinda boring.

What am I playing? The first Mass Effect and Super Mario Bros Wii.

This weekend we're taking the boys to see Alice in Wonderland. Also don't forget the Oscars this weekend. We got to see six of the ten best picture noms. We're missing Precious, Up in the Air, An Education, and The Blind Side.

Isn't that some self-absorbed interesting stuff?

Here's one last thing. I'm really fucking tired of the rolling brief case phenomenon. I know with laptops and what not, people have more to carry to and from work, but come on, pick up the goddamn bag. Everywhere you go it's clacka clacka clacka clacka as the the wheels roll down the hall. Then you have the people checking their phones while trailing their bags and weaving down the hall like drunks. No more dragging bags you lazy bastards. Here is a nice website where you can get a non-annoying bag and be like me. I've had mine for at least 6 years and it hasn't broken down at all.

Alec Ounsworth on NPR

Here's a link to a three song acoustic set from Alec's "Mo Beauty" album. I don't know how long it will be up on the site so check it out if you're a fan.
