With all the insanity of the upcoming Super Bowl here lovely downtown Indy, my company has told us to work from home on the Friday prior to the big game. YES! There could be five feet of snow on the ground and they'd still expect us to get to work, but because of the 150000 expected nutters flooding our city, the police have told most companies to stay out for the weekend. Being a chemist, there really isn't much I can do except checking email and looking up papers and stuff. Oh well, I guess I'll have to innovate on the ol xbox.

Another Sunday and another day of being exhausted and headachey. For some reason the past few weekends have found me tired as a mofo on Sunday. I don't know why either. Right now, Lindy is tired too since she's had a horrible cold and ear infection for about a week. The ears are better, but she has a pretty rough cough.

On a good note, United beat Arsenal today. The kids are being strangely good and fairly quiet too.

I saw Seal and Heidi Klum might be getting divorced. She must be swinging by Indy and wants to be free for about 10 minutes or so. See what happens when you get people's names tattooed on you Heidi?

Gingrich won the South Carolina primary, which goes to show how insane Republicans are. The moral majority votes for a guy who has been married three times and cheated on the first two. He allegedly tried to throw the idea of an open marriage out to the second wife and that didn't quite work out. The guy is a lying scumbag but the rightwingers must think he's better than a Mormon. Yeesh. If Obama loses, it will be the biggest political choke in history.

31 years

For some reason, I couldn't stop thinking about how I have 31 more years of work before I can retire. I'll be 34 next week, so almost an entire lifetime more. It was only supposed to be 17-22 until they changed the rules a few years ago. This year will be 12 years for me. That adds up to 43 years of chemistry instead of 29. Fuck.

Hell on Wheels

If you haven't been watching "Hell on Wheels" on AMC, you might want to start. We have been DVRing it since it started and really just got into it a few weeks ago. It's set in post-Civil War times in the West and centers on the building of a transcontinental railroad. Unlike other AMC shows (which are typically great) the story hasn't moved slowly. You've got cowboys, Indians, former slaves, whores, etc. It's like a toned down "Deadwood," but with what I think is better acting.

Well the year is just about finished and it's been a pretty good one overall. No major illnesses for anyone in the family, work went well, the kids did well in school, etc.

The Cardinals won the World Series and Manchester United won the Premier League.

I read a shit ton of books both paper and kindle as well as a healthy dose of comics.

I got a new car which actually starts when it's cold outside.

We went on a few vacations and still managed to put some extra money down on the mortgage.

I went to more concerts this year than in the past few and we took the boys to their first rock show. Thanks Ted Leo!

We continued a glorious Friday night tradition of hanging out with a hobo.

I got to see my good friend Fronte several times for beers and soccer.

The record collection continued to grow as did the boys appreciation for good music.

A few dictators bit it and the war in Iraq ended.

Overall, a pretty good year. Cheers to all of those who read this drivel and Happy New Year.

It's a possibility since FIFA is threatening to ban all Swiss teams from international competitions if the Swiss FA doesn't take action against one of their teams by mid-January. This would mean Basel FC would be eliminated from the Champions League and Manchester United would take their spot.

As a United fan, I think this sounds like bullshit thought up by the corrupt FIFA folks to get a small team out of the tournament so they can get a money maker back in. Lowe's pulled all of it's ads that were to air during "All American Muslim" because of this:

New music for CG

I bought three new albums on amazon this week. First, the new Roots album. It is quite good. It's a concept album that is a man's life story played in reverse, which makes you listen a bit closer to the lyrics. The beats, music, and production show why ?uestlove is one of the best in the business. These guys care about their music. I've been a fan of the Roots since their second album and this one does not disappoint.

Second, the greatest hits of Siouxsie and the Banshees. It was five bucks this month and has "Cities in Dust" on it as well as a killer cover of "Dear Prudence." Connor really likes it too, which adds another layer to his musical knowledge.

Third, Hail Mary Mallon's debut. I posted a video for "Grubstake" a little while ago and as I couldn't get it out of the ol noggin, I bought the album. I haven't had much time to listen to it, but what I've heard is good. You have to dig deep anymore to find rap that isn't pure pop/crossover shit.

Fourth, I bought the vinyl of the lost Hank Williams covers since Third Man put it out and remembered why I'm not a country fan. Not all country is bad to these ears, but this just didn't do it for me so it will probably sit on the shelf as a collection rounder outer.

Everyone has been gushing over the new album from Donald Glover, aka Troy from "Community," aka Childish Gambino. I'll admit I was a bit excited to hear it after reading some reviews, but it's just not that good, at least not from the amazon clips. Pitchfork.com gave it the first bad review of a 1.6 and while too harsh, I think they're closer than the 73 combined metacritic score. He's really trying to be like Kanye West and Kanye isn't the god of hip-hop Rolling Stone wants us to think he is. Overall, it makes me like Troy a little less and that's not good.

Man alive, iTunes is a ripoff. I had poked around amazon's mp3 store for a bit this morning and thought I'd compare some of the prices. The new REM greatest hits on amazon is $12.99 and on iTunes, $24.99! WTF? Most of the other stuff is at least $2 cheaper on amazon too. This morning I came downstairs to find Lindy making breakfast for Connor who had a look of embarrassment on his face as he had just had a wet fart and had to change his underwear. Thinking that my repeated warnings of, "If you keep forcing them out, you're going to poop your pants." had finally come true, I picked up my stuff and headed to work.

As I was pulling into work, my cell phone rang and I was informed that it was not an isolated incident and further runnings to the bathroom had occured. So, I worked quickly for about an hour and a half, then came home so Lindy could go to work and interview people.

The stomach issues weren't incredibly severe, but they were frequent up until around one. I had given him some kid's immodium so I'm hoping that my awesome parenting had a hand in it. We played some games, cars, and sword fighting, but all in all it was just another example of how much quicker kids get over illnesses than adults.

What The Walking Dead needs

It's a good show, but it would be so much better with better actors. Some say it's because they hired all unknown actors, thus the not so great acting. You could say the same thing about Breaking Bad, Mad Men, and the Killing. Sure, they have a few people you've heard of or seen in other shows, but for the most part, they weren't famous before their roles on the AMC shows and the acting is phenomenal on all of those shows. The Walking Dead women tend to overact and the character of Shane should have already been shot and killed if they were going by the comics. Hopefully they'll all get more comfortable in the roles as the show progresses.

Jury Duty - the day of...

Jury duty has come and gone. I brought my book, my black pen, and my summons. I was checked in and sat down right at 8am when the summons said I should be there. Wearing khakis, a decent work shirt, and nice socks instead of the standard CG white tube variety, I sat in a sparsely populated room with my other prospective jurors. People trickled in up until 8:30 or so even though everything said 8am. The summons said casual business attire. Apparently this means shorts and flip flops for one oddly proportioned man who seemed like a dick from the way he spoke to the lady running the show. He was one of these guys that if you saw him from the waist down, you'd assume, "Hey, that's a normal sized guy in shorts and flip flops when the summons said casual business attire." But, from the waist up you'd say, "Hey, that's a fat bastard wearing a horizontally striped shirt, which is unfortunate as we all know that vertical stripes are the slimming stripes." Another guy, who was in a suit when the summons said casual business attire, asked in an manor which can only be described as assholey, if we were allowed phones since most phones have cameras and the recording about what we could and could not bring said no cameras. The answer was yes. Who knew? Well, Mrs. CG did, but I chose to err on the side of caution thus I had also left my phone in the car, but did not feel the need to go get it when we were on break. We were informed that only one court room was operating today. We filled out paperwork and watched a video explaining how important jury service was to the American way of life. Then we had a break during which I got a pack of chocolate donuts from the canteen and a cup of "coffee." I came back, opened my chocolate gems, and was informed that the one case on this unusually light court day was not going to be tried as the defendant took a plea bargain. We had done our duty in scaring off the criminal who knew a group of savvy prospective jurors would find him/her guilty of whatever heinous crime he/she committed. After giving each other high-fives and spraying celebratory champagne on each other for the sheer power of our jurorness, we left carrying letters saying we had served to give to our employers. It was now raining outside, which made me wish I had been wearing a ball cap like one of my fellow jurors had chosen to do in spite of the casual business attire request. I ran to my car, book under shirt, like a madman fleeing the City-County building. It wasn't even 10am. I could have parked on the street.

Jury Duty

Well, I have jury duty tomorrow. I have to report downtown at 8am. I have to wear khakis. I have to dress overall nicer for jury duty than I have to for work. I cannot bring guns, knives, explosives, children, or an ipod. I can bring a book. I must bring a black pen as I will need to fill out paperwork and a pen will not provided. I need to bring cash for parking. I will be subjected to a security screening. I cannot bring drugs or alcohol. I will be downtown for at least two hours so I cannot park on the street at a parking meter. I could be on a jury for one day or three days as that is the average length of a case. If I get on an O.J. Simpson style case, I could be sequestered. I could be sent home with nothing, but a thank you and $15.

Two very different nights

How can one night be completely fun an awesome and the very next night suck a donkey's ass? Here we go:

Monday - Had an ok day at work, then Lindy and I went downtown to see the Arctic Monkeys at the Murat. We went to the Chatterbox before hand and had a drink, then walked over to Silver in the City, followed by a pretty good show. I taunted a guy in a Chelsea jersey (Torres), pointed at a lot of odd folks including a black guy in a furry hat, acted weird in front of a coworker, and just had a good time overall.

Tuesday - Logan comes home all shitty because he's tired from the previous night with the babysitter. Connor falls asleep, wakes up ok then starts bitching and moaning at dinner. In the bath, water ends up everywhere, then I have to fight the monkeys to brush their teeth and get their pajamas on. Now it's on to books and then lights out on this fucking day.

New TV

Ahh, the new TV season is upon us and already we have killed one show from the DVR. We got about halfway through an episode of "Up All Night" with Will Arnett and Christina Applegate before I looked back at Lindy and we said, ehhh. Delete! The characters were all pretty awful as was the storyline. So there's 30 minutes of every week handed back to us.

Next we watched "The New Girl" with Zooey Deschanel, which had it's moments, so it stays for now. She's extremely dorky, which is pretty funny. They're going to have to tone down the douchey guy to make it work though. Damon Wayans Jr. is on it for at least one episode, but they had to replace him after "Happy Endings" (funny, funny show) got picked up for another season. This is why if you've been seeing any promos for the show on Fox you've said, "Hey, why does the black guy look different in the clips from the show versus the part where it shows the four cast members together?" Or you may not have noticed at all if you're a racist who thinks all black folks look alike.

"Modern Family" kicked off again too and it's still a great show.

Tonight has "Community," "The Office," "Project Runway" (heyey), "Grey's Anatomy" (only for Lindy, not this citizen), and the new J.J. Abrams show "Person of Interest," which is getting mediocre reviews at best.

I haven't been writing on this much as of late and I think it is probably due to my joining of facebook. It's easier to type something stupid on my phone and put it up there than it is to sit down and type something stupid on here. Now, what's happening in these parts.

Well, I have apparently gotten to a point in my life where if I am not enjoying a book or movie I have no problem stopping reading/watching instead of slogging it out. The book? A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court by Twain. Yuck. The narrator was an asshole and I didn't see any end in sight to his being an asshole, so now it lays in the books for sale pile on my desk. The movie? Another Year. This got an 80 on metacritic and we saw a preview for it on another dvd. We got through about an hour of this before Lindy fell asleep and I said screw it. All for one character too. That's right Mary, you were the reason because you were annoying as hell. The script was up for best original screenplay too, but I'm not sure why. There was no natural flow to it. Instead, it just felt like a bad play. So screw you Another Year.

We started soccer again and I think I'm done coaching. My team coul give two shits about being out there which makes it feel absolutely pointless. I think I'll be sitting on the sidelines next year playing on my phone.

I bought the Kills' latest album Blood Pressures last week. It's not all around great, but it has a few fantastic tracks on it like "Future Starts Slow" and "Nail in my Coffin."

As for music, the Ezra Furman Kickstarter project got some of my money, so there's that to look forward too. If you haven't listened to this guy, you must. He's not getting the young genius label from the big music mags, but he should. I don't know if it's lack of self-promotion or what, but if they labeled Conor Oberst as the next Dylan however many years ago with all of his pretentiousness, then they're missing something big with Ezra. He makes humble, heartfelt music that's fun too.

Oh, I'll be tackling Infinite Jest next in the book department. We'll see how that goes.

On msnbc.com this morning there was an article about kid's movies that are apparently traumatic. On the list are Bambi, 101 Dalmatians, and Old Yeller among others. Really? Kids can handle death and tragedy better than most adults. This guy just wants to coddle his kids and show them fluff. I don't know why this pissed me off, but it did.

If I've read correctly, this weekend is the annual ICP Juggalo festival in Illinois. Apparently Charlie Sheen is going to be there this year. Maybe this is what will kill him. He can snort his body weight in cocaine. He's impervious to disease. Perhaps a crowd of people with absolutely no taste in music will take him down.

If you already own a 3DS, Nintendo hasn't forgotten about you. They are offering 20 free downloadable games from the Nintendo eShop -- 10 from the NES Virtual Console games and 10 Game Boy Advance Virtual Console games -- before they are available to the general public.

Last night Jess and I went to see Bon Iver at the Murat. They sounded pretty good, but I don't know too many of their songs so it made it a bit tough to get into. The rest of the crowd seemed to have a grand old time though. Plus, I got home a little after 11 so I'm not a zombie today. Woohoo.

Thursday has the whole family going to see Ted Leo at Earth House. Mr. Leo isn't supposed tobe on stage until 9:15 so it'll be a late night for the boys, but it will also be their first concert. I've heard the venue is hot, so the shirt may be taken off in defiance once again Ted.

The following Friday has us going to the Decemberists at the White River Lawn. They put on a good show the last time they were here and their new album is great so we'll see how they do.

We got back from a pretty swell trip to San Diego where we hit Legoland, the zoo, the beach, and the Midway museum. The high in San Diego when we were there was 72. The temp this morning in Indy was 77. It's going to be 99 here today. Why did we come back?

I'm about halfway through Mockingjay. The Hunger Games trilogy has been really good so far. Great literature? Nope, but they're quick reads and entertaining as hell.

Breaking Bad started up again. If you haven't been watching this show, go back and get the first three seasons. It's one of the best shows on tv, if not the best.

Now it's back to work.

Oh, I got a Nintendo 3DS. It is insane. I had about $120 worth of trades and then I had a Visa giftcard to take care of the rest. The only game I have is Ocarina of Time, but a lot of other stuff is coming out in the fall. That's right suckers, I'm 33 and still play video games like a kid.

In yet another all caps titled post, the turntable I ordered had to be sent back to the fine folks at amazon.com. I couldn't get the damn needle to stay put. It would just skate across the surface of the record. All the troubleshooting I found online and in the instructions did nothing to help. I will say that returns to amazon are pretty painless.

BEER BOTTLING

Last night was the beer bottling fiasco of 2011. I bought bottles yesterday afternoon. I cleaned said bottles with the sanirinse cycle on the dishwasher. I prepped all of the bottling equipment. I poured the beer into the bottling bucket which had a very questionable screw on spout. Said spout began to leak. In an effort to get the spout tighter, I popped the spout off and lost quite a bit of beer. All over the floor. At 9 at night. With the spout being held on carefully and leaking all the same, we got about 30 bottles instead of 48. You see, the spout popped off another time and leaked throughout. It was pretty messy and at first frustrating, but by the end it was just funny. Now it's only two weeks to see if the beer tastes like death or not.

New turntable

Woohoo, I have a new turntable with USB capabilities coming my way thanks to a sweet giftcard. Now I can put all of my vinyl on my ipod.

What else is happening? Well, I'm almost done with LA Noire and it's been pretty swell.

I've been reading All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy and it too is good. I have about 100 pages left then it's onto Catching Fire.

I started my first batch of beer over the weekend so we'll see how that turns out.

Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there. The boys decided to wake me up at 6:17 in the a.m. today to give me cards and gifts and what not. Logan made me a coaster and a pop-up card. Connor made me a card with his footprint in it. I also got LA Noire a couple of weeks ago and am about half way through it.

Now, it's on to lunch and a run to Borders to get Logan's free book for reading 10 books this summer. Then, we'll head to mom and dad's for a cookout. And finally, it will be time for "The Killing" finale. After that only a month or so until new "Breaking Bad." YES!

Can't publish

I know many of my three or so readers are wondering, "Why hasn't our favorite blog been very active lately?" I'll tell you why. For some reason, our home computer won't let me click the publish button. I can save a draft and publish from another computer, but it's a bit annoying.

So what's been going on?

- Lindy turned 32 and we went out with a group of friends and family to Adobo on Saturday to celebrate.

- I read The Hunger Games and it was awesome. Now I'm reading In Other Rooms, Other Wonders and it is not.

- I bought the new Art Brut, the re-issued Reatards, the Rome album, and have plans to buy the new Eddie Vedder and Arctic Monkeys albums.

- We watched Taxi Driver for the first time and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

- Lindy gave me my Father's Day gift early. She got me LA Noir for the 360 and I can't wait to get started. Right now I'm playing the Saboteur, which is fun. It's cheap too since it's about two years old.

- We took the boys to the new Pirates movie, which gave a us a rest on the Harry Potter play for a few days.

Other than sweating and coaching t-ball, that's about it.

Yes, I might be retiring from coaching kid's soccer. My God, what a weekend. I had maybe three out of my eight kids playing with any enthusiasm out there. Most of them kick the ball and then just watch it instead of giving chase. If I could play the same four the entire game it would be better, but nope, I have to play all of them.

In other soccer news, Manchester United are the Premier League champions once again. Hooray!

My Dinner with Andre

Wow, is this a bad movie. Bad, bad, bad. Pretentious, overacted, boring, did I say overacted? On "Community" a month or so ago, Abed tried to recreate the movie on a dinner with Jeff. It was funny. So, this sparked my interest in seeing the original, which was made back in 1981. Lindy and I can usually get through any movie, but 25 minutes into this one, we stopped it. Two guys sitting at dinner and talking about what sounds like the strangest theatre group ever does not a good movie make. Critically acclaimed and cult classic were the words used on Netflix. The user reviews had people saying that it was revelatory I think it was just odd enough to get the critics all flustered. It only revealed that I had made a wrong choice in my queue. It doesn't make you question anything except why on earth you tried to watch this movie.
